Summer in Budapest has a rhythm all its own. When the sun dips behind the Buda hills, the concrete still radiates heat, but the streets of Pest suddenly come alive. It is the perfect time to wander aimlessly, breathe in the warm evening air, and just watch the city go by.

If you are tired of your usual Margaret Island or City Park routines and want to combine a nice walk with a cold wine spritzer, a refreshing lemonade, or a classic lángos, here are 3 atmospheric downtown routes for those balmy summer nights.

The Parliament and the Danube Promenade at Sunset

If there is one place that shows its best side in the summer after sunset, it is Kossuth Square and the Danube promenade. When the lights of the Parliament building switch on and the first cool breeze rolls in from the river, it is a stunning sight.

It is worth starting at the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, walking along the back of the monumental Parliament building, and then looping around Liberty Square (Szabadság tér). Sitting in the grass under the massive trees, you can completely forget that you are right in the middle of a bustling city center.

If you get hungry along the way, our Vécsey utca location is just a one-minute walk from the Parliament. It is an ideal stop to grab a classic  sour cream and cheese lángos, which you can easily enjoy while sitting on the grass in Liberty Square.

Hidden Courtyards in the Shadow of the Basilica

Everyone knows the area around St. Stephen’s Basilica, but if you are willing to step off the busiest tourist trails, you can find beautiful, hidden architectural gems on the border of the 5th and 6th districts.

Start from the Basilica, but instead of drifting toward Deák Square with the crowds, turn into the quieter side streets. Look for the Art Nouveau buildings around Hold utca or the Postal Savings Bank (Postatakarékpénztár). In the summer, these streets are much more peaceful, and wandering in the cool shade of the turn-of-the-century apartment buildings is a real pleasure. The neighborhood is packed with tiny galleries and architectural details that we usually just rush past on weekdays.

From Erzsébet Square to Nagymező Street

If you like being where the action is and want to sync your walk with the early rhythm of the Pest nightlife, this is your route.

Start from Akvárium Klub (Erzsébet Square), where sitting on the steps or the grass is practically a summer ritual. From there, cut across toward Hajós utca, walk past the Opera House, and you will end up on Nagymező utca—the “Broadway of Pest”—where theaters, outdoor seating venues, and cultural hotspots line the street.

If you take this route, our second location at Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út 25 (right at the Arany János utca metro station) is right on your way. A fresh cheese and sour cream or a hearty Hungarian-style lángos paired with an ice-cold draft beer is a pretty great way to kick off a long summer night.
